Smart casual is looking polished and refined while still dressing casual and is accepted for work and business. Dressing “smart” is a clean and neat look and not over the top in any way. You can still have your personal style but with moderation, you don’t have to look boring, just use good judgment. Although many people have a general good understanding of smart casual, many people still do many no-nos that is not part of the smart casual attire.
Below are 3 of the of the most common smart casual no-no’s that should be avoided, regardless of the smart casual dress code, these are usually a general no-no for work or business.
SMART CASUAL NO-NO’S TO AVOID
- Women, it’s important that you do not show too much skin. If you can wear something to a night club, then it’s probably not appropriate for work or business, it’s not smart casual attire. This is number 1 on the list for a reason, many women show too much skin for work or business. No mini-skirts. Skirts and dresses should be at the knee or a little bit above, no more than approx 4 inches above the knee is a good.
- No deep plunging necklines or cleavage. If you can see your cleavage, don’t wear that top or blouse. No spaghetti straps or strapless tops or dresses unless you are wearing a jacket or sweater over it.
- Too tight of clothing. Make sure you buy your right size and not too small. Smart Casual attire should not show off your curves, leave those clothes for the evenings. Clothes should lay on the skin and not squeeze the skin.
